Classiebawn Castle
The trip along the R279 from Cliffoney to Mullaghmore is dominated by Classiebawn Castle, which is best known as the former home of Lord Louis Mountbatten, Viceroy of India and Earl of Burma. This striking building is one of the most photographed icons in the north-west of Ireland, with its fairytale towers and its dramatic position on the cliff top.
The building of Classiebawn was begun as a summer residence in the early nineteenth century by local landowner and British Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, though he did not live to see its completion. The Castle, designed by the architect, J Rawson Carroll, was completed in the 1870s by Palmerston’s sucessors, William Cowper-Temple, first Baron Mount Temple and his nephew, Rt Hon Evelyn Ashley. During this time they resided at the Cliffoney Inn in the Village of Cliffoney in what is now O’Donnells Bar. [codepeople-post-map]
